Safe Tanning in London

Sunbeds are a controlled and pleasurable way of achieving a tan and offer a degree of protection for that special holiday abroad. It is important though to always follow the instructions supplied with your Sunbed. If you have any safety concerns regarding using a Sunbed you always talk to your local doctor before starting to use a sunbed.

In order to achieve a healthy safe tan it is essential that Sunbeds are used correctly and in accordance with the instructions supplied.

There is currently no direct evidence which specifically links the sensible use of sunbeds with skin cancer.

It is acknowledged that people with different skin types will react differently to Ultra Violet rays. People with darker skin normally tan more easily as they tend to produce more melanin. Men or Women with fair skin often find tanning more difficult as their skin contains less melanin. In some cases people with fair skin will not tan either on a Sunbed or in direct sunlight. There are many recommendations concerning safe sunbed use and we advise that you always first refer to the specific instructions supplied with the Sunbed you are intending to use. As a general rule,

YOU ARE ADVISED NOT TO USE A SUNBED IF:-

  1. You are under 18 years of age
  2. You are taking medicines or drugs, which increase sensitivity to Ultra-Violet rays or you have a medical condition that becomes worse in sunlight
  3. You have fair sensitive skin, burn easily and never tan.
  4. You have a large number of freckles or moles
  5. You or anyone in your immediate family has had skin cancer
  6. You have a history of Sunburn, especially in childhood

IF YOU ARE PREGNANT, CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE USING A SUNBED

BEFORE USING A SUNBED

  1. If signs of redness remain from a previous session or from sunbathing, do not use the Sunbed
  2. Do not consume alcohol
  3. Make sure you understand the instructions on the length of each session for your skin type NEVER EXCEED THE LIMIT
  4. Make sure you know how to turn the Sunbed off
  5. Remove all cosmetics and perfume from your body and face, take off jewellery and remove contact lenses
  6. Do not use outdoor sun lotions and sunscreens. Always wear protective goggles that comply with BS EN 60335-2-27
  7. Any person who is suffering from a medical condition(i.e. heart or kidney condition, diabetes, epilepsy, migraine etc) or is taking a treatment of tablets or any form of medication should consult their doctor before using a Sunbed. If you have any doubt whatsoever, do not use a Sunbed until you have consulted your doctor.

It is important to understand that the natural tanning process should not be rushed as this will increase the risk of sunburn and could result in permanent damage to the skin.

Most Sunbeds have a skin chart fitted with guidance on starting times for particular skin types. The majority population of Britain is made up of 4 skin type groups.

Type 1 :- Fair skin, often with red hair. This skin type almost always burn and do not tan. This group should not use a Sunbed

Type 2 :- Fairish Skin. Do tan eventually but tend to burn easily especially in the early stages of exposure

Type 3:- Brownish/white skin. They do tan easily but can still burn if over exposure

Type 4: -Darker Skin. Tan easily and rarely burn.
